The Province is responding to a report from the Representative for Children and Youth following an investigation into the death of a teenager who was suffering from mental health issues.
At the time of his death, the investigation found that the 17 year old was languishing in hospital because his caregivers could not find a safe placement in the community.
Mental Health and Addictions Minister Judy Darcy says government will work toward a strategy where youth can get complete wrap-around care.
“We had a fragmented approach and we had care providers stepping in and then stepping out. It happened repeatedly…clearly there was a number of people who understood that the young person was facing many challenges and struggling but there was not continuous and seamless and coordinated care.”
The Representative for Children and Youth says government needs to develop a plan to deal with incidents like this one within 12 months and implement it within 2 years.
