Spirits of the West Coast Native Art is getting set to launch their new gallery building.
The Comox Valley’s newest fine art destination is all ready to launch after receiving a traditional K’omoks House Blessing.
The Spirits of the West Coast Native Art Gallery is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a move to the traditionally-inspired cedar building on Back Road. It opens on Saturday, November 18th.
The new post-and-beam gallery will continue to create a place where visitors can be inspired to learn more about Comox Valley and British Columbia First Nations, their cultures, artists, and art forms.
Since 2007, the gallery has made sure Coastal BC First Nations artwork is available by presenting original, hand-carved masks, limited edition prints and jewellery from over 100 First Nations artists.
Owner Walter Stolting says he fell in love with the cultures of the Northwest Coastal First Nations upon his first visit to Vancouver Island. “The art and ceremonies represent a deep connection to the land,” he says.
“Not just using land and resources, but managing those resources in a respectful way. It was here that I felt that I wanted to support First Nation artists in their communities and have a dedicated Gallery to share the gift of original carvings and artistic visions with others.”
Opening day for the new gallery is Saturday, November 18th from 12 PM to 5:00 PM at 2696 Back Road in Courtenay.
