COURTENAY, BC- Some behind-the-scenes changes have been made to the local Special Needs Recreation (SNR) program for adults.
SNR was previously run by the Courtenay Recreational Association (C.R.A.), and will now be organized by the City of Courtenay.
According to a release, the changes come as the C.R.A. and City are formalizing roles and taking steps to provide clarity for staff and the public about the distinctiveness of each organization.
The C.R.A. will still keep some programs that will benefit from non-profit status.
Services offered by Special Needs Recreation will not be changed. The same programs will be offered at the Lewis Centre. What is going to change is how the programs and events are organized internally.
Some re-branding is taking place, while the City will fully assume management and operations of SNR.
The first step is a new name for SNR. That will be, “Adapted Programs for Adults with Disabilities”. Programs offer activities that are modified to assist those with intellectual disabilities to ensure they can have fun, keep active, be social and learn new skills.
Adapted Programs will continue to offer services to people aged 18-plus. Programs include Art Cards, Bowling Leagues, Karate, Adapted Sewing, Young Adult Club and themed dances, and holiday events.
