SURREY, B.C. – Students from the Comox Valley are celebrating a successful trip to the mainland.
Four students competed in the province-wide French public speaking competition, Concours d’art oratoire provincial finals.
“Concours is a fabulous celebration of excellence in French language education. Through participation in Concours, students develop confidence in French as well as develop their public speaking skills,” said President of Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon, Diane Tijman.
“These are the kind of skills needed in today’s global society and ultimately these students will gain greater employability as a result. As effective communicators, they will become the leaders of tomorrow.”
Nadia Macluskie finished in third place. She’s a grade six early immersion student at Robb Road Elementary in Comox. She read her story titled, “Les aventures de mon grand-père” (The adventures of my grandfather).
Provincial finalists from the Comox Valley included:
• Mahatta Price, a grade six late immersion student from Puntledge Park Elementary, for “Le gaspillage de nourriture” (The waste of food).
• Anika Wulff, a grade eight immersion student from Mark R. Isfeld, for “Pullution lumineuse” (Light pollution).
• Michelle Adebar, a grade 12 early immersion student from Mark R. Isfeld, for “Ma vallée” (My valley).
This year’s competition marked the 35th anniversary of the event.
