COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – A Courtenay educator is now a part of history.
Jeannine Lindsay, who works as an Indigenous support worker at Courtenay’s Lake Trail Middle School, is one of nine recipients of the Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education.
This is the first year the awards have been presented to educators who make a difference to their students and to their community.
“I’m grateful for their commitment to making life better for students in British Columbia both in the classroom and their communities. Great educators give our students the opportunity and tools to succeed, today and into the future,” said BC Premier John Horgan, in a government release.
The nine winners were narrowed down from a list of 188 nominees, then 27 finalists.
Winners were awarded a commemorative artwork, a $3,000 personal bursary for professional learning and a $2,000 contribution to their school community for professional learning.
“It’s really important for people to gain more knowledge about where we live, and the land we live on and the people that originally lived here,” Lindsay said in a government-provided video, speaking on her work at Lake Trail.
