COURTENAY, B.C. – An older man in his 60s was struck by a vehicle this afternoon in the downtown core of Courtenay.
However, Courtenay Fire Chief Don Bardonnex said it was a fairly “low velocity” hit, and the man did not suffer any major injuries.
The incident happened at 5th Street and Duncan Avenue, where it appeared as though the man was struck by a white van travelling south through the intersection.
Although it was not a major collision, Bardonnex did have some advice for pedestrians.
“Always look out for your own safety and don’t expect drivers to see you,” he said.
The fire department and RCMP responded, along with BC Ambulance, who took the man to hospital for assessment. The victim was conscious and talking to first responders.
A passerby also assisted, holding the victim’s head until first responders arrived.
The driver that struck the man remained on scene and spoke with police. There is no word on any charges being laid in relation to the incident.
Traffic was briefly delayed while crews were on scene, but the area has since been cleared.
