CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Nearly 80 North Island College students in Campbell River received $95, 000 in scholarships and bursaries this year, all thanks to NIC donors.
According to a release from the NIC Foundation, Kaya McNeill-Payeur received the Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary, which supports students intending to pursue a career in social work. McNeill-Payeur expressed her gratitude to donors at an awards ceremony at NIC’s Campbell River campus.
“Not only does the contribution from Lyndon’s family and the support from the NIC Foundation help alleviate the financial challenges of returning to school as a single parent,” said McNeill-Payeur. “But it is an honour to have received a bursary created by the family of a man who had such a profound impact on our community.”
Lyndon Cross was a social worker in Campbell River and was an advocate for children and their foster families under the Youth Protection Services. His family started the bursary in his honour.
Overall, the NIC Foundation distributed $375, 000 in awards to 415 NIC students.
The NIC Foundation supports students through scholarships, bursaries, and technology in classroom, with the aim of making learning facilities accessible to Central and North Island students.
