CUMBERLAND, B.C- A fake gun caused a stir in Cumberland on Thursday evening.
Around 5:00 p.m., a heavy police presence was seen heading into the village, ending up at a trailhead close to the community’s civic park. Shortly afterwards, heavily armed officers were seen walking out of the woods with a handful of teenagers with them.
According to Comox Valley RCMP spokesperson Constable Monika Terragni, frontline officers had responded to a report of youth in the area with what appeared to be a handgun.
“Any call involving firearms will receive a considerable police response – it could be a BB gun, a replica firearm, or a real firearm but police officers will treat them all as real until they can prove they’re not,” said Terragni.
“If it looks like a real gun, it is not a toy – it can be mistaken for a lethal weapon, by police or anyone else who sees it.”
Terragni said that the situation was resolved peacefully, with no injuries.
No charges are expected.
