COURTENAY B.C – The city plans to host a Day of Mourning ceremony and moment of silence at the Simms Park Pavilion, to raise awareness on workplace safety.
On Sunday, April 28th at 11:00 a.m, the city invites residents to experience a Day of Mourning ceremony and moment of silence at the Simms Park Pavilion.
The event is help raise awareness of the importance of workplace safety, and to honour workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered from work-related illness.
It will be hosted by the City of Courtenay, WorkSafeBC, the District Labour Council, and the Canadian Union of Public Employees 556.
Paige Knapman, the occupational health and safety advisor for the City of Courtenay, said in a release that the day of mourning is important, as it helps us remember the victims of workplace accidents.
“The day of mourning is a time for us to remember fallen workers, and also to reinforce the importance of safety on the job,” said Knapman.
She also added it reminds us to speak out if we feel our workplace isn’t safe.
“It’s a reminder to all of us that we need to stay vigilant, minimize risks, and speak up if we think something isn’t safe.”
The Day of Mourning has been a national event since 1991.
