COURTENAY, B.C. – Science World will be taking its road show to the Comox Valley next Thursday.
Science World’s On The Road team will be at the Community Science Celebration, taking place May 11 at Courtenay’s North Island College (NIC).
Science World On The Road visits more than 30,000 students each year at schools outside the Lower Mainland, which might not otherwise have a chance to visit Science World at TELUS World of Science.
According to a release, “the team’s high-energy gymnasium presentations are curriculum linked and will provide students with unforgettable science experiences.”
Running from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the free community event in Courtenay will include shows, demonstrations and challenges, along with an opportunity to meet people in the community doing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) every day.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with NIC to bring this Community Science Celebration to Courtenay,” said Jo-Ann Coggan, Director of Community Outreach for Science World. “It is a showcase of the community for the community and will profile local businesses, organizations and innovators. Science World will provide fun, dynamic science experiences for the whole family as part of this event.”
The event at NIC will include exhibitors, chemistry demonstrations, such as screaming gummy bears and Dr. George’s “Flaming hands of Death,” as well as multiple hands-on demonstrations in biology and physics.
“It will be a great day for kids to come and explore a wide range of science activities for kids of all ages,” said Michael Willers, NIC Department Chair, Math and Science. “It will show kids the range of cool and interesting things they can study in the sciences.”
