CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Vehicles trying to flee from police is becoming a disturbing trend.
That’s according to the Campbell River RCMP.
In the last 12 months, Cst. Maury Tyre says there have been eight individuals who have attempted to flee from police while at traffic stops.
“While eight instances of any one crime may seem like a small amount over the course of a year, the trend is very problematic,” Cst. Tyre added.
Cst, Tyre calls fleeing from the police a public risk. Those who flee from police take off at high speeds and run red lights, and speed over crosswalks.
Most recently, one driver used a pedestrian walkway trying to get away. This kind of behaviour puts pedestrians and other drivers in grave danger.
In some cases, the individuals trying to get away have been prohibited drivers.
“In many of the instances, the individuals have been known drug traffickers from other cities that have come to Campbell River to peddle their brand of human misery,” Cst. Tyre wrote.
Individuals who attempt to flee from police can receive sentences of up to five years and up to life imprisonment if someone dies as a result of their actions.
The RCMP ask that anyone with information about drivers who operate vehicles while prohibited or trafficking drugs to please get in touch with police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
