GE technologies are not precise and outcomes are unpredictable. That’s from local crop scientist and farmer Arzeena Hamir of Amara Farm.
She’s hoping that the city of Courtenay and council will encourage farmers to hold back from growing genetically engineered crops.
Hamir touches on how this would affect Comox Valley residents.
Hamir adds a procurement policy would tie in with the Valley’s “Buy Local” concept and act as an economic driver in the community. The procurement policy would replace items that are currently genetically engineered, like corn, soy, sugar beet and canola.

She says if a city enacts a GE-free policy, it’s quite symbolic and shows that the city takes people’s concerns into consideration.
