Good news for BC’s geoduck industry.
Hong Kong has just lifted a ban on importing the giant clams, which had been in place since the end of December after PSP, or paralytic shellfish poisoning was found in a shipment.
Michelle James, the Executive Director of the Underwater Harvesters Association, says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has now changed the way they test geoducks being exported.
James says even with the ban lifted, the industry is still facing challenges, because the entire west coast of Vancouver Island is closed due to PSP.
James says Hong Kong represents about 40% of the global market for BC geoducks, which is one of the province’s most lucrative fisheries.
