This Thursday is the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and it is also Orange Shirt Day.
The Indigenous-led days honour the lost children and residential school survivors, as well as their families and communities.
The Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society in Courtenay and MIKI’SIW Métis Association are holding the Comox Valley Spirit Walk in downtown Courtenay during the day.
The organizers are encouraging participants to wear orange “to remember Indigenous children and families affected by residential schools and other child apprehension programs.”
The event is taking place from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and registration will be held at Harmston Park.
The federal government announced in June that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation would be a new statutory day.
Crown corporations, the majority of schools, and various businesses and workplaces in British Columbia will be closed.
