The Cumberland Business Association is launching a new project to encourage more people to spend time in the community’s downtown area.
The project will feature painted sidewalk bump-outs on four corners in downtown Cumberland.
Local artists will paint nature-inspired murals that will be at each corner, and flags and lights will be placed at the intersection.
There will also be a sculpture composed of bikes created by a local artist and metal worker included in the project.
The initiative is receiving funding from the Island Coast Economic Trust (ICET)’s THRIVE Small Capital Program.
“As we support tourism businesses and communities in the Vancouver Island region on their road to recovery, we are honoured to be a funding partner of the THRIVE Small Capital Program to help vitalization projects such as this be realized,” said Anthony Everett, Tourism Vancouver Island president and CEO.
The project is expected to kick off soon, but an exact launch date was not announced.
“The interactive, educational, and visual components will drive visitor interest, while fostering a vital and shared sense of community engagement for locals,” says ICET Board chair Aaron Stone. “This project truly reflects a grassroots, volunteer driven commitment to building community vibrancy through creativity, which sits at the heart of the THRIVE program’s goal.”
