More than 1,300 households are expected to see their internet speed improve on Hornby and Denman islands after a referendum this past Saturday.
94 per cent of voters were in favour of financing high-speed internet infrastructure.
Voter turnout was 55 per cent.
“I am thrilled to see the community voted in favor,” said Comox Valley Regional District Electoral Area A director Daniel Arbour. “Seeing projects like this come to fruition after years of research and community interest is so amazing. Thank you to the Hornby/Denman internet committee for bringing this issue to light and helping find a community solution with CityWest.”
The expected cost of the project is nearly $7.6 million and 90 per cent would be covered by grants.
The remaining $760,000 would come from the communities.
The Comox Valley Regional District board will discuss the upcoming stages of the initiative on Dec. 7.
