It will be taking a bit longer for paving to begin on the 5th Street Bridge.
That’s according to the City of Courtenay, who announced Monday that due to recent snowfall, paving on the bridge will not begin as early as expected.
Paving was expected to begin today, Dec. 7, however, the work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled for the coming days, according to the city. They say the paving may begin without much notice.
The north lane of the bridge will be first to get paved, according to an announcement on Dec. 2. The bridge and sidewalks will stay open, but the city says drivers should expect delays for 24-hours while the concrete cures.
Extra traffic control and signage will also be in place to keep vehicles off the fresh pavement and keep vibrations down as the concrete sets, according to the city. Once the north lane sets, traffic will switch to the south lane can be paved in the coming weeks.
The city says drivers should take alternate routes to avoid congestion including:
- The 17th Street Bridge
- Condensory Bridge
- North Connector – Piercy Road.
The repairs are expected to be done by January 2022.
