Courtenay councillor Melanie McCollum is turning all her energy and efforts from her campaign for re-election to be with her family after a tragic incident.
In a statement read to Courtenay council by councillor Will Cole-Hamilton Monday, McCollum said her mother was struck by a truck Sunday afternoon while riding her bicycle downtown.
McCollum said her mother was taken to Victoria with serious injuries for surgery, but the injuries were too severe.
“This afternoon, at this time I’m turning all my energy to supporting my family,” said McCollum. “I appreciate the warm wishes and kind words from the community, they mean a great deal to my family. We ask for privacy as we mourn her loss.”
Courtenay mayor Bob Wells says the news is heavy in council’s hearts and appreciates everyone’s support for McCollum.
Council also held a moment of silence in recognition of the tragedy.
