BC Hydro is asking you to be careful at Nymph Falls and Barber’s Hole during the Chinook salmon migration.
According to stakeholder engagement advisor Stephen Watson, adult salmon will be moving through the six-kilometre stretch of river from the generating station to the Puntledge diversion dam, the fish ladder and eventually past the dam and into the reservoir.
To make their journey a bit easier past Stotan and Nymph falls, there will be five, two-day higher flow rate releases. They will happen every Wednesday and Thursday starting June 14.
The Nymph Falls and Barber’s Hole areas will see higher flow rates of around 12 m/s3, double what the average flow rate is. Temporary safety signage will be put in place, but all other areas of the river will have a normal flow rate, with no safety notices.
BC Hydro adds the generating station is running at about 20 per cent of capacity but might be operated at full generation for the short-term to control the reservoir level.
They add the reservoir level is at around 135.1 metres and may be peaking over the next few weeks. It usually sits at between 131 to 135.3 metres above sea level and the inflow forecast is at around 81 per cent normal.
Once the reservoir peaks, they will manage outflows through the summer for fish habitat, domestic water supply and power generation.
