There might be some disruptions in the Comox Community Centre’s parking lot this fall as five pine trees will be removed and repurposed.
The town says they made the decision because the trees’ roots have created some safety hazards with lifted and broken asphalt and curbs. They add the trees will be replaced with eight new trees in another location on the grounds.
The trees will not be removed until September, after the bird nesting season. Comox mayor Nicole Minions says they are taking the removal seriously.
“There were no options for saving and replanting these trees,” said Minons. “However, the tree stumps will be reused, and woodchips will be repurposed at the disc golf location and for mulching tree wells throughout the town’s parks system.”
Three other trees are also damaging the parking lot, but they do not have to be moved right now, according to the town.
Signage and updates will be posted onsite and in the centre. More information can be found on the town’s website.
