New brunch series focused on mental illness and violence starts in Comox Wednesday

Residents planning on having brunch in Comox can also join an event focused on violence and mental illness.

The Vinospa Speaks Out series, is a brunch series that offers opportunities for people to learn, share, and understand topics that are affecting many in the Comox Valley. The topics include domestic violence, mental illness, and drug addiction.

40 Knots Winery owner Brenda Hetman-Craig says these topics are vitally important for the community.

“We are hoping that they are going to resonate with those attending the event, and inspire them to have real, meaningful conversations with those in their lives,” she says.

Along with a panel of experts sitting in on the event, Stigma-Free Society President and Co-Founder Andrea Paquette will be a guest speaker.

Principal Owner at CB Projects Chrissie Bowker says Andrea is a perfect first speaker, given the goal of this event.

“The Stigma-Free topic is really an overarching philosophy for the entire speaking series,” says Bowker. “Andrea was 25 when she was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and was able to get the right medical care, and was able to heal. Now she wants to share that experience with others and makes it her life mission to stamp out the stigma surrounding mental illness.”

Two events in this series will be running this year, with registration for the first event kicking off after 11 a.m.
