Comox Valley RCMP say a man is in custody and is charged with multiple offences after a “serious assault” in Cumberland.
Officers say the incident happened at around noon on July 5, and they were called to the 3300-block of Third Street after a report of an assault with a weapon. They add officers arrived at the location with multiple units including major crime, traffic and an emergency response team member.
A suspect was quickly identified, but officers say he fled on an ATV and into a rural wooded area. Officers were able to arrest the suspect with the help of police dog and air services.
The victim sustained serious and potentially life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to hospital, according to police. They say he is still in hospital and in stable condition.
Media relations officer Cst. Monika Terragni says is no safety risk to others.
“Although the investigation is still ongoing, the evidence gathered thus far indicates that this was a targeted attack and there does not appear to be a risk to the general public,” said Terragni.
