New RCMP contract could mean tax increases

Courtnay council moved to “approve in principle” an increase the RCMP budget to just over 7.4 million dollars.

The increase would pay for a 3.5% percent wage bump for RCMP members and body cameras.

If the plan is approved the city would need to increase taxes by 0.67% to keep the Comox Valley detachment at the current staffing level.

Of the 64 members at the detachment, just over half is funded by the city of Courtnay.

Council will fully approve the increase during budget discussions later this year.
