Options to keep cool are being offered in the Comox Valley as a heat warning is expected to last until Thursday.
According to the CVRD, the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay is open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and half the conference room will be used or cooling. Other options in the city include the Lewis Park Outdoor Pool and Splash Park from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the public library on 6th Street.
The Comox Community Centre will be available from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the lobby and large meeting room. Alternatively, the splash park at the Comox Marina will also be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the misting stations at Comox Fire Rescue at peak temperatures and at the Comox library.
In Cumberland, the rec centre will be open from Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Cumberland Lake Park, Splash Park and Library will also be options.
The district adds that when temperatures start to rise, risks also climb because of the heat. Mild to severe heat illness symptoms can include:
- Pale, cool, moist skin
- Heavy sweating
- Muscle Cramps
- Skin rash
- Swelling, especially on hands and feet
- Fatigue and weakness
- Light-headedness and/or fainting
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
They add it is important to stay hydrated, and not to wait until you are thirsty to drink.
