Comox Valley Search and Rescue recovering 77-year-old hiker missing since Monday

Comox Valley Search and Rescue say they have located a hiker missing since yesterday and are working to determine how to extract him.

According to Paul Berry of CVSAR, the hiker went missing at around 3 p.m. Monday in the Boston Canyon near Forbidden Plateau and below Mount Becher. While they briefly had eyes on him, he went back into the woods, and they lost him in the difficult to hike in terrain.

However, Berry says they now have located the man by voice and are determining the best way to pull him out. Berry adds they have concerns about his condition, especially with the current heat warnings.

“Certainly, there’s a concern regarding any heat related injuries,” said Berry. “The concern here is the subject is in very steep terrain, very heavy vegetation so very he’s difficult to locate and may be difficult to evacuate.”

Berry says teams were out last night, including RCMP and police dog services.

He adds that for anyone out in the backcountry right now it’s very important to be prepared for the heat.

“Anyone out hiking today, they need to ensure they are prepared for the environment, for the warm weather and that they are hydrating and looking after themselves,” said Berry.
