Missing hiker rescued thanks to coordinated SAR response

A hiker missing since Monday was rescued Tuesday near Mount Becher, thanks to multiple search agencies.

Paul Berry with Comox Valley Search and Rescue says the 77-year-old man was extracted by helicopter and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“He had taken a fall and was unable to walk,” Berry says. “Predominantly I think because of his dehydration and exposure, heat-related injuries more than anything else, but pretty beat up from a fall.”

The man went missing at around 3 o’clock on Monday after becoming separated from his hiking group in the Boston Lake area. Rescuers with RCMP and police dogs worked through the night to find him.

Volunteers from Comox Valley and Campbell River Search and Rescue, along with North Shore Rescue’s helicopter team, helped extract the hiker Tuesday afternoon after he was spotted by an RCMP helicopter.

Searchers located him by voice on Tuesday, but Berry says the area has steep terrain and thick vegetation making rescue difficult until the North Shore helicopter could assist.
