New school supplies for students will be easier to access after a local car dealership’s contribution to Comox Valley Schools.
Comox Valley Dodge’s Fill the Ram donation dropped off hundreds of supplies from binders to backpacks, duo tangs, pencils, pens, paper and other supplies to the district.
According to communications manager Craig Sorochan, the donations are particularly important as the cost of living has increased in the Valley and across the country.
“Families are definitely feeling the pinch of prices right now and this is a great gesture for our families and parents,” said Sorochan. “There’s a wide variety of school supplies so we’re going to put the call out to principals and vice-principals, and I know they will be down here quickly to pick them up.”
For Comox Valley Dodge dealer principal Carson Grant, the donation is close to his heart as he grew up without much to bring to school each year.
“I grew up as that kid who didn’t have all the newest stuff and I knew what that made me feel like,” said Grant. “We just wanted to come together and make a difference in the community and keep on giving back.
“I think that it’s going to make a dent. Obviously, we’d love to keep on growing this over the years and hopefully next year we’ll be able to double it up.”
Sorochan adds it is not the only way parents can get help with providing school supplies to students with the cost of living.
“Most schools, for parents who need some extra support for the extra costs at the start of the school year, we do have hardship policies and funds available,” said Sorochan.
“A lot of them aren’t accessed by the end of the year so don’t feel any stigma if you’re needing a little assistance and want to have some support for school supplies.”
Grant adds they will be doing more give backs to the community as the year goes on.
