CVRD reminding residents permits are needed to set off fireworks

Ahead of Halloween, the Comox Valley Regional District is reminding you that you need a permit to use fireworks within the electoral areas A, B and C.

According to the district, the permits are required before exploding or setting off fireworks, and those include sparklers, Christmas crackers and caps for toy guns. Permits are available online or at the district office on Harmston Avenue for $10, according to the district.

They add you must be at least 18-years-old and fireworks can only be set off on your own property or with the owner’s permission.

If you live in Comox, Courtenay or Cumberland, you will need to contact your municipality for fireworks regulations and permit requirements.

Building and bylaw compliance senior manager Amanda Yasinski adds that if you do not have a permit, you could face a $500 fine.

“This Halloween season, make sure you get your fireworks permit first,” said Yasinski.

“As well, please respect your neighbours and let them know beforehand if you are planning on setting off fireworks to help reduce the possibility of frightened children and animals.”

The sale of fireworks in the district will happen between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1 and must be from a commercially zoned retailer in working under the current fire regulations within the area.
