In an effort to keep unnecessary waste from going into landfills, Comox Strathcona Waste Management will be increasing tipping fees and charges next year.
Waste management says the board approved and adopted the updates in September. It will include larger penalties and enforcement on contaminated loads.
Changes to fees will range anywhere between $10 and $35 per tonne and as much as $50 per unit for ammonia containing units not covered by stewardship materials.
For example, a $10 per tonne change will be applied to municipal solid waste for a proposed fee of $155 per tonne.
A $35 increase has also been proposed for construction and demolition waste that has either recyclable or prohibited materials, bringing the fee to $365 per tonne.
Waste management co-chair Will Cole-Hamilton says increased costs continue to be a reality they are facing, and they want to make positive changes within the landfills.
“Properly sorting your waste and diverting recyclable materials can save you time and money at either of our CSWM waste management centres, and we encourage residents to consider this step before heading to the landfill,” said Cole-Hamilton.
“The goal of this tipping fee update is to encourage behaviour change aimed at reducing waste and thereby extending the life of our landfill, which ultimately saves money for all taxpayers.”
