Residents of the Comox Valley really showed a tremendous amount
of hospitality and community spirit during the Centennial Homecoming Week, and despite the
heat turned out in great numbers to support the many events that took place.
The weather was hot, but not too hot to show team spirit on the football field, boogie in the streets, or celebrate Canada Day with the longest parade on record! The diversity of the week’s entertainment was fantastic, with over 50 local entertainers and artists providing concerts in the parks to audiences
of all ages.
There were many smiles shared at the Courtenay Airpark as the Citizens of the
Century were acknowledged for their contributions. The volunteerism in our community was
truly cause for celebration, with fanfare and fireworks.
Planning the week of free family focused events was no small task, and the Centennial
Celebration Committee and the City of Courtenay would like to thank all members of the
community, volunteers, and sponsors for making Homecoming Week such a tremendous
success.
It was a memorable celebration that brought together many new community
partnerships including community organizations and sponsors, friends, families, and visitors.
“We’re very pleased with how smoothly the week’s events went and the turnout was
great,” says Ron Webber, Chair Centennial Committee.
“All of the volunteers did an amazing job to help create a celebration that people will remember for years to come.”
The Government of Canada Department of Heritage was a major sponsor of these events, and
as more Centennial celebrations are planned for the coming months, we acknowledge and
appreciate their financial support.
