A new swing set installed at Hornby Island Community School is being celebrated by the community as the island’s first accessible playground equipment.
A ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday marked its official opening and it is now available for the whole community to use. The swing set incorporates an accessible swing and suitable ground cover, which Comox Valley Schools says will let children of all abilities play side-by-side.
The project began in October 2022 through the school’s PAC, and they were able to fundraise over $36,000 to bring the vision to life. Comox Valley Schools adds they got significant contributions from the Children’s Charity of BC, the CVRD, First Credit Union, Hornby Island Co-op and numerous community donors.
CVRD Area A director Daniel Arbour says he is impressed with the PAC’s dedication, making the moment even more special.
“I believe each community should have a great playground, and it’s with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the leadership provided by the Hornby PAC, in seeing this project through,” said Arbour.
The district adds the swing set also addresses the previous lack of municipal playground equipment for the island.
They thank all funders and community members involved and families can look forward to seeing all the positive impacts of the swing set.
