Bus drivers set to vote this weekend on a new deal

After several failed attempts at an agreement, bus drivers in the Comox Valley and Campbell River are voting again this weekend on a new deal.

Unifor union local 114 represents bus drivers, mechanics and cleaners in both regions. The union says it has reached a tentative deal this afternoon with employer PWTransit, which operates the bus service under contract with BC Transit.

A ratification vote is scheduled to take place Sunday, Dec. 10 and more details about the contract will be released following ratification.

The union has been without a contract since March 31. Wages are at the core of the dispute. The union has been asking for wages to be increased so they are on par with services in similar-sized BC communities.

Both regions have been plagued by a driver shortage this year, the company says it has been actively hiring but the union says the wage gap with other communities has made recruitment difficult.
