The City of Courtenay says the retaining wall along Anderton Avenue across from Riverside Park is at risk of failure and inspections are being done to decide new actions.
According to the city, they have been monitoring the wall since a repair was made in 2016. It is made of two sections – a 50-metre sheet pile section and a 210-metre concrete section. They add the movement is on the sheet pile part of the wall.
They say that part could be at risk of partial or total failure. That could look like a gradual slide toward the river, or a rapid collapse from a flood or seismic event.
“This notification is a proactive measure to make property owners and residents aware of the condition of the Anderton Avenue retaining wall. We recognize that this information may be concerning, especially among impacted residents,” said mayor Bob Wells.
“The city is completing additional structural inspections and is actively working to determine a path forward for the impacted properties. We are committed to ongoing communication about this sensitive matter.”
Private property owners and residents impacted by this risk have been notified directly, and the city will install warning signs in the affected area.
More updates will come as information is available.
