Comox elementary school wins second place in music contest

An elementary school in the Comox Valley has won second place in a music contest.

École Robb Road Elementary, located in Comox, reached second place in the Primary Vocal category, where the students performed a cover of Flowers Need Rain by Banx & Ranx and Preston Pablo.

Felipe Sequeira, a music teacher at the school, says that for some of the students involved, this was their second year competing in a row.

“This year, they were competing against 120 different entries to become second in all of Canada, so it was a pretty impressive feat,” said Sequeira.

He says for the last couple of years, they approached the contest as a school-wide activity, with four classes submitting videos for this year.

They also spent time in September and October practicing the covers. Sequeira adds that this achievement is motivational for their program.

“It gets them involved and engaged, but also great recognition for the work they have put in,” said Sequeira.

“Being able to be seen on YouTube and be heard on the radio, it just makes them super proud of themselves.”

He says the students are already thinking about which songs to pick for next year.
