Panhandle rattled by significant earthquake, no tsunami danger to coast

After several small earthquakes this week, the north coast felt a 5.9 magnitude tremor just before midnight last night off the Alaska Panhandle.

The quake happened at a depth of 20 kilometres, off the coastline northwest of Prince Rupert. According to the US Geological Survey, it was felt by more than 560 people.

The US Tsunami warning system says there is no danger of a tsunami expected from the quake.
