One person arrested in connection to Courtenay dumpster fires

Comox Valley RCMP say a 26-year-old Courtenay man has been arrested in connection to multiple dumpster fires in the 1900-block of Fitzgerald Avenue.

Officers say there have been many fires reported behind a multi-residential property over the last few weeks. They add one of the fires involved a mattress that was fully engulfed and spread to a nearby fence.

Police worked with major crime and street crime units, and they were able to link the suspect to multiple fires in the same area.

“It was good old-fashioned police work that led to the arrest of the suspect,” said media relations officer Cst. Monika Terragni.

“We had investigators in the area talking to residents, gathering video footage and speaking to witnesses before ultimately making the arrest.

Following a court appearance, the man has been released from custody before his next court date.
