The level four drought conditions have Island Health seriously considering ways to save more water.
Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Richard Stanwick says they’ve long been commited to water conservation, but they’re now purchasing new laundry machines and dishwashers that use 60-70% less.
Stanwick says outdoor irrigation is one area they’re unable to cut back completely.
Stanwick says Island Health is going to work on a drought map, to determine which areas are experiencing the worst conditions.

He says ensuring communities have access to enough clan water to drink is a key their job, since Medical Health Officers are also Drinking Water Officers under provincial government legislation.
