New machines allow BC to significantly improve access to medical scans

Thanks to recent investments in medical equipment, BC hospitals were able to complete the most ever MRI and CT scans during the past year.

There were 322,000 MRIs performed, an 83% increase over 2017, and nearly 300,000 CT scans, an increase of 43%.

Since 2017, the health ministry has added 18 new MRI scanners, including four for Island Health, and nine new CT scanners, one for Island Health.

Health Minister Adrian Dix says it’s a follow-up on the government’s 2018 commitment to improve access to medical scans and reduce wait times, so people can get treatment sooner.

Since 2019, the number of staff operating the machines has also increased by 133%.

BC now has the second-shortest wait times in Canada for medical scans.
