The city of Courtenay is looking to extend a community grant that funds services to help the homeless.
Called the Strengthening Communities Grant, it focuses on supporting unsheltered homeless populations in the region while addressing related community impacts.
In a letter to Cumberland council, mayor Bob Wells says the grant expires on June 30 this year.
“City staff have engaged in discussion with partners regarding the potential impacts of the funding termination and plans for sustaining services post the SCG program’s conclusion,” said Wells.
“While all principal partners express their intent to continue providing services beyond June 30, 2024, it is anticipated that service levels may diminish after this date.”
Wells says he is asking the Village to join them in endorsing the submission of a letter to the BC Government, with hopes of holding a meeting to figure out how to extend the grants.
The letter will be presented on the Village’s council meeting on June 24, with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m.
