Project Watershed Society happy to be recognized by Land Awards

A local group says they’re happy to have been recognized at the Land Awards this year.

Last month at the Land Awards Gala, Comox Valley Project Watershed Society won the Fresh Water award for their work on the Kus-Kus-Sum project.

Executive Director of Project Watershed Cailtin Pierzchalski says it was really nice to get the recognition.

“There’s been a lot of people working really hard on behalf of the project partners to get us to this point, so it feels really good to receive widespread recognition,” said Pierzchalski.

She says they didn’t have any high expectations of winning because of the number of projects in their category, so when they found out they won, it was really exciting.

With the project running since September 2017, Pierzchalski says the community has been very supportive of the initiative.

“That was one of the core goals of our work when we first started undertaking it was just to ensure that this was in fact a project the community wanted to see move forward,” said Pierzchalski.

“We reached out to our community and asked them what they thought, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.”

She says they currently get support from funders, volunteers, students, and community members for the project, with over 250 volunteers, 586 students, and 3100 donors.

She thanks the community for supporting the project to this point.
