Following an assault on numerous people in Downtown Courtenay, Mayor Bob Wells has spoken out.
On September 4, a youth was arrested after assaulting people in front of the library with a knife around 9 a.m.
Wells said he’s thankful for the quick resolution and that everyone deserves to feel safe in the community.
“My heart goes out to those directly impacted by this incident, with gratitude there were no reports of serious physical injuries.”
Wells said work is being done in both local council meetings and meetings with provincial ministers to improve the support needed for community members.
Two new members have been added to the bylaw enforcement team since 2021 to support compliance with them in the community, with additional bylaw updates to be considered in the fall.
Meetings with provincial ministers, ministry staff, and Island Health have been made to get more funding and more housing units according to Wells.
Wells added council is considering the approval of a purpose-built shelter, day services, and a supportive housing project, but work needs to be done to make those happen.
The public is reminded to call 911 if anyone is in immediate danger, or to call the non-emergency line if there’s concerns of danger.
