Near-normal fall temps in BC’s forecast, meteorologist says

As summer wraps up, a meteorologist says we could see near normal temperatures for the fall.

That comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada operational meteorologist Jennifer Cowell, saying that for BC, this summer has been nicer compared to previous ones.

“We’ve had much better conditions as far as wildfires go, we didn’t have a heat dome, and it’s just been more temperate, a bit more moderate,” said Cowell.

“Regardless of those couple weeks we had in hot weather, it’s nothing like we have seen in previous years, and it’s just been a little bit safer and more enjoyable.”

Cowell says while some places on Vancouver Island saw record-breaking temperatures, including Port Alberni, places like Courtenay didn’t have record-breaking temperatures. The highest temperature in Courtenay was 30.6 degrees, a 7.4 decrease from the all-time record of 38 degrees back in 2021.

She says according to their seasonal forecast, we have a 60 percent chance of being slightly above average for the next three months.

“That doesn’t really speak to a trend in any direction and it’s really hard to say,” said Cowell.

“Something like a seasonal forecast could cover that it’s going to be warm, and then it’s going to be cool, and it ends up being 60 percent chance of being above normal anyways.”

Cowell says as we get into the fall season, we can expect to move into a period of cooler and wet weather for the next two weeks.
