City crews to upgrade 5th Street this coming week

Expect a late-night road closure this coming week, as city crews are upgrading 5th Street.

The City of Courtenay says crews will repave the eastbound and westbound lanes of the 5th Street hill to the bridge and the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue.

The goal is to improve the driving surface’s strength by adding aramid fibers to new asphalt, with this work part of the Pedestrian, Cycling, and Pavement Renewal Capital program.

Because of the work, the bridge, 5th Street to Cliffe from the bridge, and the intersection will be closed to traffic.

While you can take the sidewalks, they say you can take detours in Comox Road, Ryan Road, the 17th Street bridge or Condensory bridge while driving.

Traffic control personnel will be on-site to help pedestrians and cyclists as the work continues.

They say crews will work on Thursday September 26, wrapping up on Friday between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
