Solar flares create another chance to see Northern Lights this weekend

If the skies clear this weekend, you may be able to see another aurora borealis display similar to the light show in May.

The sun emitted a strong solar flare early Thursday morning, according to NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. It follows another flare on October 1. That means stargazers may be able to see the Northern Lights from Friday until Sunday.

NASA’s Space Weather Prediction Centre forecasts a G3-class, or strong, geomagnetic storm. It’s not as strong as the G5 event in May, but will still create light displays visible over much of Canada, weather-permitting.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can cause disruptions, but there were no major issues reported after the May event.
