Halloween is just around the corner and municipalities in the Comox Valley, along with local fire departments, are reminding people that the use of fireworks may be prohibited within their communities.
The city of Courtenay says some businesses in the Comox Valley are selling fireworks, but the regulations around regional fireworks permits do not apply to properties located inside Courtenay’s boundaries.
Selling or discharging fireworks is a violation of Courtenay’s bylaws and people could face fines.
The Town of Comox says individuals are not permitted to set off fireworks and it will only issue a permit for community events that are open to the public, or film and television events require pyrotechnics and special effects.
The Village of Cumberland says fireworks permits are required for anyone to use Low Hazard Class fireworks on October 31.
Cumberland’s permits are available online and should be completed in advance of Halloween.
Fireworks can cause serious burns and injuries, such as eye and hand trauma, and responding to incidents involving fireworks puts increased demand on emergency services, and first responders.
There is also a high risk of property damage, and the noise created by fireworks is traumatic for wildlife and domestic pets.
