Local governments in the Comox Valley look to recognize the Métis people next week.
Starting next Tuesday is Métis Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the heritage, history, and contributions of the Métis people, one of the three recognized Indigenous peoples in Canada.
As part of that week, the Comox Valley Regional District says the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, and Village of Cumberland will recognize the week through flag-raising events in their own city offices.
Board of Directors for the MIKI’SIW Métis Association say they are pleased that the local governments will acknowledge the people and raise the Métis flag.
The district adds the flag-raising will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Cumberland’s village office, noon at the Town Hall in Comox, and at 1 p.m. in Courtenay city hall on November 12.
Along with the flag-raising, the week will celebrate Louis Riel Day, a day acknowledging Louis Riel, a political leader who advocated for justice for the Métis people.
That day is November 16.
