Harbours on Vancouver Island from north to south are getting new federal money to do repairs and improvements over the next three years.
On Tuesday Liberal MP Parm Bains (Steveston – Richmond East) announced the new funding on behalf of Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dianne Lebouthillier. More than $30 million has been earmarked for BC projects. On the Island and the Sunshine Coast, the funding will pay for wharf and float reconstruction in 11 harbours from Alert Bay south to the Cowichan Valley.
The fisheries minister says as the nation with the longest coastline in the world, Canada must invest in resilient harbour infrastructure capable of facing the climate challenges of today and tomorrow. She adds the investment also encourages economic development and food security.
