For the second time this weekend, Comox Valley Search and Rescue (SAR) were tasked with another mountain rescue.
Crews began a foot rescue on Mt. Allen Brooks Sunday, November 24, around 5:00 p.m. to rescue two people after one of them sustained an injury.
SAR Manager Paul Berry said only a team of four were able to reach the pair on skis due to difficulty with the weather.
“Heavy snow when we began the operation last night made it difficult to access the area both by snowmobile and by skis.”
The crew reached the pair around 1:30 a.m. this morning and were able to dig two snow caves to stay in for the night while assessing the person’s injuries and giving pain medication.
The pair were skiing in the Mt. Allan Brooks area where one took a fall and resulted in them injuring their hip.
Berry said helicopter operations were expected to start this morning to get the injured person the help they need and bring crews back to Raven’s Lodge at Mount Washington.
Neither of the individuals were prepared to be out overnight, something Berry said everyone should be prepared for if planning to explore the backcountry.
“Anyone going into the backcountry needs to be well prepared for the conditions in the mountains, the weather changes quickly and we need people to check weather reports before going out.”
It’s the second SAR rescue of the weekend in the mountains for the team, after crews recued an injured snowmobiler Saturday afternoon.
