Starting tonight, the Comox Dam will be seeing increases and decreases in water release.
According to BC Hydro, staff will lower water release from the Comox Dam from 65 cubic meters per second to below 40 cubic meters per second starting this evening.
The change comes as this month has seen inflows into the reservoir be about 20 percent above normal, with the reservoir currently at 133.6 meters, a normal number for this time of year.
Public Affairs coordinator Karla Louwers says while the release is lower, the spill rate still presents dangerous conditions along the Barber’s Hole and Nymph Falls section of Puntledge River.
“Beginning Friday night, we plan to increase the water release from the dam from about 40 m3/s to about 70 m3/s and plan to hold it at that flow rate through the weekend,” said Louwers.
“These increased flows will provide a recreational opportunity for expert kayakers. The wider public is advised to stay away from the river flow.”
She adds on Sunday night, water release will again be lowered to between 25-30 cubic meters per second, expecting to maintain that release through early December.
