Starting today, you can support the Comox Valley Food Bank through the Stuff the Truck fundraiser.
98.9 Jet FM is once again running this fundraiser, teaming up with Thrifty Foods Courtenay Crossing and the food bank to bring non-perishable food items to the bank. The goal is to help feed those who need it the most during the holiday season.
Jet FM’s own Kent Schumaker says for this year, they are more excited than ever.
“Every year it has grown, it’s been bigger and bigger, I can speak on behalf of the Comox Valley Food Bank that it’s a necessary partnership we have,” said Schumaker.
“Each year we say we hope that we can get more than what we did the year before, but I think just getting enough to get the bank through the Spring season is just a good tap on the shoulder saying good job.”
Schumaker says the need from middle-income families for the service has grown every year, adding that they see it every day with the people they talk to and the clients they work with.
He also says the need for the Food Bank has gone up more this year than in year’s past.
“The way we know that is through tracking the pallet challenge,” said Schumaker.
“It always launches beforehand, so a lot of our partners and clients usually wait until the day of or days of Stuff the Truck to start buying pallets. We’ve seen more come in ahead of the event. I’ve had more phone calls to my desk asking how can they buy a pallet. The fact that those kinds of questions and comments are coming in earlier tells me it’s more important to them this year than before.”
The pallet challenge is one way to support the event. A pallet of food is packed by Thrifty Foods, with one pallet taking up to 1,000 pounds of food, and you can buy one or more by paying $500 each.
For this fundraiser, they are going to have a counter to show how much donations grow as Stuff the Truck continues this week.
Stuff the Truck will have five live-on-location events hosted by the JET for you to show your support.
They will take place at Thrifty Foods on Cliffe Avenue on Monday, the Courtenay Fire Department on Tuesday, Cumberland Fire Hall on Wednesday, Comox Fire Rescue on Thursday, and back to Thrifty Foods on Cliffe on Friday to wrap it up.
